Growth Factors

Growth can be attributed to the growing awareness about maintaining nutritional balance in soil among farmers. An increase in the global population has resulted in a rise in the annual crop yield, which has boosted the agriculture sector across the globe.

Nitrogen and hydrogen are the key raw materials used to manufacture nitrogenous fertilizers. Nitrogen is the primary nutrient in fertilizers, and it is required in large quantities by plants. Hydrogen is an important component of ammonia, which is a key ingredient in most fertilizers. Almost all commercial-scale ammonia incorporates hydrogen and nitrogen. Availability of raw material impacts nitrogenous fertilizer prices and production.

By Product Analysis

The urea segment accounted for the largest revenue share of around 39.2% in 2020. This is attributed to the low costs of urea and the high level of nitrogen present in it. Urea is the most important nitrogenous fertilizer as it contains nitrogen content as high as 46%.

Ammonia was the second-largest product segment and accounted for around 22.0% of the revenue share in 2020. This is attributed to excellent solubility and high leaching loss resistance. Ammonia is the foundation of the nitrogen fertilizer industry.

Other products segment of the market includes calcium nitrate, ammonium sulfate nitrate, and amide fertilizers (calcium cyanamide, diammonium phosphate, etc.). Calcium nitrate contains nitrogen in the nitrate form only as it is produced by reacting nitric acid with crushed limestone.

By Application Analysis

The cereals and grains segment accounted for the largest revenue share of around 45.0% in 2020. This is attributed to the utmost care needed by these crops for high yields and to generate maximum profitability for farmers and the overall agriculture industry.

The oilseeds and pulses segment was the second-largest application segment in 2020 and is predicted to witness a CAGR of 5.7% in terms of revenue over the forecast period. This is attributed to the requirement of improving the germination percentage of seeds and ensuring proper growth of dense pulse canopies.

Other applications of nitrogenous fertilizers include ornamental plants, fiber plants, etc. Nitrogenous fertilizers are also used to promote the growth of ornamental and fiber plants.

By Regional Analysis

Asia Pacific dominated the market and accounted for the largest revenue share of more than 62.0% in 2020. This is attributed to large area available for cultivation, considerably high rural population, and favorable climatic conditions.

China is the largest consumer of nitrogenous fertilizer in the world and accounts for one-third of the total global consumption. These fertilizers play a significant role in maintaining food security in the country by allowing a large increase in both grain and non-grain yields. Rice, wheat, barley, millets, soybeans, tomatoes, potatoes, peanuts, tea, and cotton are the key crops produced in the country.

Europe was the second-largest regional segment in terms of revenue in 2020 and is anticipated to grow with a CAGR of 5.3% in the coming years. This is attributed to the larger landmass occupied by agriculture and grasslands in the region.
